Yoga on Chatham Lighthouse Beach

September 30, 2013

It takes something pretty enticing to get me up before 7 a.m. on vacation.  In Chatham, the idea of yoga on the beach was just enough to lure me out of bed.

Every morning during the summer, Chatham Lighthouse Beach Yoga offers an outdoor class at, where else, the Chatham Lighthouse Beach at 7:30 a.m.  The yoga class cost $10, and it might have been the best $10 I spent on our Cape Cod vacation.

This particular morning dawned foggy and damp.  The fog made for a moody atmosphere as it moved in from the ocean.  It felt like we were doing yoga in our own little cloud.  It was at the same time peaceful and transfixing to gaze out over the ocean, unable to tell where the steel gray water stopped and the fog began.

Our instructor, Valerie, led the group through a relaxing, breathing-based yoga practice.  It was a mellow class geared toward all abilities, which was perfect for me.

The class appeared to be a mix of locals and tourists of all ages.

I found that the sand actually helped my balance and stability, while the peaceful morning on the beach made it easier than usual for me to get in the yoga mindset.  The view from my “yoga mat” was pretty unbeatable.

At the end of class, I all but fell back asleep while laying comfortably on the sand during Shavasana.  When all was said and done, I walked the few short steps down to the water to let the tide kiss my toes.

It was the perfect way to start our last full day on Cape Cod.  My morning yoga session sent me back to the Chatham Guest Rooms feeling totally ready for our next adventure – a jaunt out to Provincetown!
