Breakfast on the Runway at Hangar B

September 19, 2013

On our first morning in Chatham, we ate breakfast in the most unique location.  Hangar B was fabulous, but let’s get to that in a minute.  Before we made our way to breakfast, we each grabbed a cup of coffee and went for a walk along the beach.

It had been crummy weather the day before and we’d only stopped by the beach, so when we woke up and it was relatively bright, we decided to seize the moment.  We drove down to Chatham Lighthouse Beach.

Chatham Light House

The Chatham Lighthouse has been guiding ships through the dangerous waters surrounding the island for years.

Chatham LighthouseThe beach it watches over isn’t a great swimming beach due to dangerous currents and the ever-present possibility of Great White Sharks, but it made for a wonderful place for a morning stroll.

I relish starting my day off with a leisurely cup of coffee during vacation, and doing so while walking along a beautiful beach was perfection.

Hanger B ChathamI can honestly say I’ve never read a sign like that at the entrance to a restaurant.  We were sure to stick to the path as we made our way to the restaurant, passing right by the small planes parked on the runway and one taxiing.

Chatham AirportHangar B is quite the popular breakfast spot, and on this Sunday morning we had to wait close to an hour.  However, there was plenty to watch while we waited and the hostess was happy to serve us coffee while we watched the planes.  Eventually we sat down at the bar outside overlooking the runway.

As soon as I took a look at the menu, I knew our wait would be worthwhile.  I love breakfast spots that have inventive items on the menu, and Hangar B did not disappoint.  They also had a lot of organic, local and vegetarian items on the menu. I debated between a handful of dishes before selecting the Black Bean Burger.

The homemade black bean burger was topped with a fried egg, arugula, avocado, roasted tomatoes and served with a side of salsa verde.

It was large and in charge, and I polished off every bite.  It left me feeling full but not too weighed down.  The boyfriend went with a tasty-looking egg sandwich:

The sandwich was good but apparently not filling enough, so he followed it up with an order of Peach Waffles off the specials board.  I snuck a couple of bites, and all I can say is wow.

We loved our food and got a total kick out of watching the airplanes take off and land right in front of us.  It was a cloudy morning, so there weren’t a ton of scenic flights taking off.  I’d imagine on a nicer day there would be even more action.

Hangar B delivered on location, scenery and food.  I found it well worth the wait and wouldn’t have minded returning if we’d had a few more mornings in Chatham.

Tell me – where is the most unusual place you’ve ever eaten breakfast?
