A Perfect Colorado Evening

July 29, 2013

When the sun started to go down on the Saturday night of our hut trip, it was sweet relief from the heat and intense sun we’d had all day.  For dinner, we had each brought something to “grill” over the campfire (our fire pit had a grate for just this purpose – awesome) and a few of the girls had brought enormous and delicious pasta salads.

Campfire Dinner

We had fun cooking over the open fire, which was a total novelty for me.  After dinner, we realized that the sun was starting to set pretty quickly and that we’d need to get a move on in order to reach the top of the ridge above our hut in time for sunset.  Our destination was the top of Resolution Mountain, the rise on the left side of the photo above.  There were a couple of false summits and it was a lot higher than it looked from below.

Sunset Hike

We grabbed our beverages and most of us laced up sneakers, and we high-tailed it to the top.

The hike was short but steep, and we were all glad to have reached the top in plenty of time to watch the sunset.

We celebrated two birthdays on the hut trip, and one of the birthday girls brought a bottle of bubbly to pop at sunset.  If that’s not a perfect plan, I’m not sure what is.

The nearly full moon had already risen behind us and added to the 360-degree beauty we were able to take in from the top of Resolution Mountain.

While we waited, we took bets on what time the sun would set.  I was off by 4 minutes.

A little bit of yoga and a few headstands also ensued.

Then the sky started to look more and more spectacular, and we all focused our eyes on the horizon.

It was definitely one of the most beautiful sunsets I’ve ever seen.  It was amazing to stand on top of a mountain with nothing obstructing my view of the sky around me.

We had a fun hike down, helped down the steep slope by a hilarious game of “Would you rather…?” I got to spend the weekend with some truly funny people.

Back at the hut, we got the fire going again and kept the party going outside with birthday cake, plenty of drinks and more silly games.

There were s’mores, too.  So. Much. Sugar!

Reflecting back on that night at the hut, it really was my idea of a perfect Colorado evening: dinner around a campfire, a hike, a beautiful sunset, birthday cake, wine and s’mores.  Does it get any better than that?

What’s your idea of the ultimate evening in your neck of the woods?

Beautiful photos! Camping cheers to you and yours! Just got back from Leadville area, and we were blissed out even after shaking the water off of the rainy gear and tent!

Thanks Mike! Cheers to you as well! It sounds like your camping trip was a little more adventurous than ours. I’m glad you had a wonderful time despite the weather!
