SUPER Bowl Sunday

February 11, 2013

What’s that you say?  That was last weekend?  No, silly.  I’m not talking about a day of football, wings, beer and Beyoncé.  I’m talking about the amazing Sunday I had yesterday skiing Vail’s back bowls.

Back Bowls

After a week of on and off snow storms, the sun came out Sunday morning to reveal a lot of fresh powder.

Powder on Seldom

Vail had only reported 5 inches of snow overnight, but we were up to our knees in a few places.  The snow was soft, light and sparkly.  In a word: perfect.  (And yes, I realize I’m probably the only person in the world who thinks sparkly snow is better than non-sparkly snow.)

Powdah

We ventured into the back skiing runs including Seldom, Genghis Khan and Red Square.  I was skiing with friends who know Vail like the backs of their hands, so I pretty much played follow the leader while they led us from one fabulous run to another.

It’s been a while since I’ve skied this hard, and my legs were screaming by lunch time.  I think they were screaming with happiness though.  I ski often enough that a day of cruising around doesn’t feel like a workout at all.  But a day of powder, crud and uneven snow made my legs shake and my turns get sloppy by the end of the day.  It was a great feeling.

This is my favorite photo of the day. On the left, that's me and my friend Matt celebrating an awesome run. The guy in the blue pants on the right - no clue who he is but want to be his best friend. Awesome photo bomb.

Mid-way through the day, we decided we wanted to beat our previous biggest days of the season and ski at least 30,000 vertical feet.  Because we are cool like that.  For those of you who have never heard of it, Epic Mix is an app that allows you to track your vertical feet and a bunch of other cool things through your ski pass at Vail Resorts.  I’m a big fan of the app, and the feature that shows your vertical feet for the day as compared to the rest of the season motivates me to a little self-competition.

I didn’t make it to 30,000 feet due to the aforementioned shaking legs and the fact that we ran out of time, but I did have my biggest ski day of the season so far and felt pretty good about that.  Plus it didn’t record at least one of my runs, not that I’m counting or anything.

Apparently powder inspires me to thrust my poles into the air. Totally normal.

We capped off the day with a few great runs down the front side, followed by apres with a bunch of friends.  All in all, a super bowl Sunday!
